The rich history of the Bassett & Findley company traces back to its founding in 1914 by the visionary George Bassett and was joined by his partner Ernest Findley in 1918. As the company’s success grew Bassett & Findley took on considerably more joinery work including shopfronts, counters and fittings. In the years that followed, the expanding company moved to a number of premises in London, eventually settling in 1930 in the bustling Elephant Castle district of London. Over the years, the company thrived and carved a niche for itself, becoming a reputable presence in the form of architectual metal craft, which included the introduction of the new technique of drawbenches.
During 1939-45 the company was engaged in the production of metalwork and joinery components for aircraft and vehicles. At this time the younger members of the staff were called for service in various branches of the Forces, many to serve with great distinction, and mostly female labour was engaged. At the end of the Warthe company’s activities were largely repair of War damage with the many restrictions at that time on materials.
However, a significant turning point occurred when the original factory faced a compulsory purchase. Undeterred by this challenge, the resilient company and many dedicated members of its workforce embarked on a journey of relocation, choosing Wellingborough in Northamptonshire for it’s central geographic location. The new destination, marking a pivotal chapter in the company’s narrative, became the present-day site at Talbot Road North in Wellingborough.
The move not only signified a geographical shift but also marked the continuation of the company’s legacy in a new and modernised setting. The relocation allowed Bassett & Findley Ltd. to build upon its heritage, blending the time-tested traditions with contemporary innovations. Today, the Talbot Road North location stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the company, reflecting its commitment to quality craftsmanship and adaptability across changing times and landscapes.
The current owner and Managing Director, Neil Griffiths began his working life with Bassett & Findley in 1989 as an estimator learning the capability of the business and a full understanding of its financial achievements. Bassett & Findley Ltd still remain one of the Country’s best Architectural Metalwork Companies with an ongoing reputation still setting bench mark standard for others to follow.
